Welcome to school of pure and applied sciences
The school of Pure and Applied Sciences is strategically placed to offer support programmes for achieving SEKU’s mandate in research and innovation in dry land agriculture, water resources, mining and environmental conservation. The School has continued to offer, develop and review relevant market driven academic programmes in order to meet the teaching and training requirements in the pure and applied sciences. SPAS has a qualified faculty, offering intensive training and scientific exposure feeding onto SEKU’s contribution to achieving the Kenya’s Vision 2030.
The School offer academic services to most of the other schools in the University. It initially hosted the school of health sciences before the latter became independent. Key physical facilities within the school include four well equipped ultra-modern laboratories for practical learning. The school also has a state of the art Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, which is a key facility in analytical research.
Currently, the School has over 1,100 students, has produced 76 graduates since 2014 and today 131 are getting their degrees. The school’s Mathematics Association of South Eastern Kenya University (MASEKU) engages staff and students in various activities such as; secondary school motivation programs through visits and motivational talks, internal mathematics forums where speakers are invited to talk to the students on applications of mathematics, mathematics contests for secondary schools and, planting of trees among other activities.
The School currently consists of five departments namely: Mathematics and Actuarial Science; Physics and Electronics; Chemistry; Biology; and Biochemistry. The departments offer various programmes ranging from certificate, diploma, undergraduate to post graduates studies. Bridging certificate courses are also offered in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics.
