Vision

To be a school of excellence in high quality water resources training, research, outreach, technological development and consultancy for the advancement of human well-being.

Mission

To provide an academically stimulating environment that enhances training of highly qualified personnel for water resources development and management through provision of quality education, research, extension and consultancy services.

Objectives of the School

1.To train personnel in water resources sector by offering educational programmes in hydrology, limnology, marine sciences, fisheries and aquaculture at certificate, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

2.To offer extension services and increase awareness on water resources development and management issues among professionals, government officials, local communities, institutions and other key stakeholders.

3.To provide a forum for effective collaboration between the public and the private sectors and other interested parties for development and management of water resources.

4.To offer consultancy services in the development and management of surface and groundwater resources, fisheries, aquaculture, limnology, and marine resources.

5.To conduct research in hydrology, limnology, marine sciences, fisheries and aquaculture and disseminate information and innovative technologies for sustainable water resources development and management.

Introduction on the School 

There is no doubt that water resources are important pillar of socio-economic development of any country in the world. In the arid and semi arid region that cover more than 80% of the total land area of the Republic of Kenya, water is an extremely important resource. It is on this basis that the South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) established a School of Water Resources Science and Technology (SWRST). The School is the only one in all public universities in Kenya that is solely dedicated to science of water resources. It is also the only School that has an academic department dedicated solely to hydrology and water resources. The school therefore is unique and has important role to play in building the capacity for sustainable water resources planning and management in Kenya. The vision of the school is to be a globally recognized centre of excellency in the science of water resources.

Currently, the School has four (4) separate academic programmes, namely

(i) B.Sc in Hydrology and Water Resources Management

(ii) B.Sc in Fisheries Management and Aquaculture Technology

(iii) B.Sc in Aquatic Sciences

(iv) M.Sc in Integrated Water Resources and Watershed Management.

Plans are underway to launch other equally competitive academic programmes at M.Sc and Ph.D levels.

The research opportunities in the arid and semi-arid lands 

The School is located in south eastern Kenya in Kitui County, about 160 km from the city of Nairobi. The area in which the school is located is surrounded by gentle hills that drains into the Mikuyuni and Mwita Syano Rivers- the two important tributaries of the famous Tiva river,which eventually drains into the Tana Basin. The location of the School in Kitui combined with the beauty of a typical semi-arid rural environment common to many parts of Kenya, provides an ideal environment for serious academic pursuit. The tropical semi-arid climate, diverse  landscapes and unique vegetation of South Eastern Kenya also provides a broad range of water related issues to study.

Many communities in the arid and semi-arid region of Kenya rely on both surface and ground water resources. Also, a significant segment of the population depends on surface water reservoirs (dams) for provision of water. This provides the staff in the school an opportunity of conducting research on how water resources in this region can be used on sustainable basis. Staff in the School therefore work jointly with our stakeholders and students on various water related research projects. Our students are introduced to various subjects that are important in water resources management such as hydrological processes, surface water and groundwater hydrology,  watershed erosion and reservoir sedimentation, climate change, water governance, water resources and fisheries management, aquaculture technologies, among other equally important subjects.

Since the rainfall in arid and semi arid regions of Kenya is characterised by high inter- and intra-annual variability which induces challenges in the management of water for various purposes, this is a major focus of our research in the School. The School in particular pays special attention to surface runoff harvesting and storage and its subsequent use for various socio-economic activities such as horticulture, irrigation and aquaculture development in arid and semi-arid lands. Other research programmes are focused on the river basin process, impacts of climate change on hydrological systems, fisheries and aquaculture technologies, among others. The location of the School in arid and semi arid environment that is already experiencing the impacts of climate change means that our researchers and students have an opportunity to carry out innovative research studies on the impacts of climate change on water resources, fisheries and aquatic systems. This also means that our students have a wide choice on topics for their undergraduate and postgraduate research projects.

Programmes for students with diverse backgrounds

Most of our students undertaking MSc studies in Integrated Water Resources and Watershed Management are drawn from diverse fields such as earth sciences, geographical sciences, biological sciences, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences and engineering. Our programmes integrate both physical and social sciences, thus providing an all round training for students who are planning to pursue careers in water resources management, assessment and monitoring. All our students are

provided with an opportunity of undertaking a field-based project in their undergraduate programme. This exposes them at very early stage to various research approaches which enhances their problem solving and technical document drafting skills. We also attach our students to reputable institutions in the country where they learn new skills and experience real life working conditions. Our training approach also provides a good grounding for both Bachelors and Masters degree students planning to pursue further studies in hydrology and water resources, aquatic sciences, fisheries management and aquaculture technology, among others.
